Instances of obsession within my life inspire my compulsive way of working.

I make controlled, precise, labour intensive pieces, regarding the theme of ambiguous human desires. My imaginative, ‘sensory’ realist approach creates sleek and intense imagery in a range of media: drawing, in pencil and chalk, acrylic painting, soft sculpture, collage and photography. My work speaks as a seductive draw, beguiling the viewer.

"Inherent in pause/play is tension; it implies a dialogue between passive and active, stop and start, reflection and performance.

As both Mark Twain and the pianist Artur Schnabel noted, the pause can be the moment of greatest intensity where the art resides; it is when decisions are made about the next play – be that a strategic or intuitive approach to making.

The degree show can be viewed as a monumental pause, a deep intake and holding of breath, prior to whatever lies ahead, or the final play in what has been for these artists four years of intensive work encompassing a range of practice-based experiments and assignments, historical and theoretical studies and various types of professional practice experience."

Dr Venda Pollock

Venda Louise Pollock's research investigates the relationship between art and the urban environment, examining representations of cities in a range of visual media and public art in urban contexts, particularly at moments of change. She is co-director of Intersections, a project linking Fine Art with the wider cultural sector in the field of public art.

Venda Louise is currently the Head of Art History within Fine Art.
