My sculptures are an exploration of Mikhail Bakhtin’s writings on the grotesque body. That is, a body which shits, eats, has sex and indulges in physical pleasures. The bright colours and oozing dough celebrate this carnivalesque nature of bodily existence.
However, within contemporary society this ‘grotesque’ body is manipulated and disguised in order to comply with social norms. The sculptures play homage to this human desire to conceal the unpleasantness of bodily function through the drapery of fabric.
The sculptures are seductive and yet disgusting.
