My practice is an exploration of female portraiture and is concerned with the historical and political significance of this genre. Through a complex and seductive aesthetic, I aim to reclaim the face of female portraiture.
My paintings translate an archive of photographic imagery sourced from old family and found photos and photo postcards. Drawing provides an essential link between these images and the final paintings and is key to expressing the core essence and depth of the portrait. I use oil paint in thin translucent layers to create ephemeral paintings, devoid of facial detail, but with a faithful understanding of the women’s character and aura.
