The MFA at Newcastle University is a two-year studio-based programme in Fine Art and is designed to enable students to develop careers as professional artists.
Samantha Cary
Over the past two years my paintings have been shaped by my daily journeys into Newcastle. Based on observation and memory the paintings are often concerned with the human figure and with pattern. Pattern has become a pictorial device that serves to disrupt and compete with the figuration in the paintings throwing the, often banal, subject matter off balance.
The paint is applied fairly rapidly and the marks are fresh and energetic, retaining the excitement of visual discovery and finding witty equivalents for appearance. The paintings move between abstraction and figuration; colour and shape sometimes coalescing to describe recognisable forms and sometimes remaining less resolved.
